One-day Centenary Conference
and Memorial Dinner
"READING IS LIVING"
Monday,
1st July 2002
This one-day Conference highlighted
educational aspects on expanding our horizons, individually
and collectively.
|
|
INTRODUCTION
The
conference was aimed at teachers, educational planners, psychologists,
parents and anyone else interested in the teaching of reading as a holistic
multi-dimensional approach in line with Outcomes Based Education to
ensure that South Africa becomes a fully literate society, able to compete
globally.
"The past is history, the future a mystery, the present
is a gift!"
"Every child loves to learn, to be interested, to succeed,
and when the inability to read thwarts the pursuit of his natural
inclinations, the effects are always unhappy, often disastrous."
"The true value of education is to train young and older
minds to think, to query, and to come to their own conclusions without
blindly following everything that is said. In these days of subtle
propaganda, this aspect of the work is vital if readers' minds are
not to be trapped. Many dyslexic pupils, as well as children and adults
without problems, are convinced that the written word is always the
truth. Comprehension lessons are excellent opportunities to point
out the opposite."
